Staying Active over Break
It is a special events week here at Varsity! Which means that regularly scheduled classes are taking a short break. With this break, it is important to remember to stay active outside of cheer or dance class.
Taking too much time off from cheer or dance is not a good thing. If you take too much time off, our boadies have a hard time adjusting when we do return to class. Our bodies have to adjust to the exercises we do in class again, making class more tiring then it was before break. For example, last week doing a handstand may have been very easy for you, but if you take a whole week off from exercise, that same handstand will be harder to do when you return to class. Listed below are a couple of reminders for this week to keep you on the right track.
Stay Active
Just because you don’t have a tumbling class or a dance class this week doesn’t mean it is ok to sit all week long. Go outside and play with your friends. Maybe put together a team and place soccer or basketball. Play with your siblings, or even have your siblings do your home workout with you. Make sure to keep moving so our muscles continue to build strength.
Stretch Everyday
In both cheer and dance classes, we make sure to stretch everyday before we exercise. Make sure to stretch everyday to maintain your flexibility. Doing your splits everyday for at least one minute will help you maintain your flexibility. Hold all of them for longer then one minute if you are trying to become more flexible. Don’t forget about our straddle stretches, arm stretches and bridges to maintain our flexibility all over our body.
Eat Healthy
Taking a break from classes is not an excuse to overindulge in sugar and sweets. Make sure you are making healthy choices when eating. Choosing fruits and vegetable are great healthy choices. Proteins are important to help build muscles, like chicken or beef. Try to choose food options that are not fried, and limit the amount of sugar you are eating and drinking. Maintaining a healthy diet while on break helps our body stay energized.
Practice these tips everyday, and when you return to Varsity, it will feel like you took no time off at all. If you can’t go a week without class, check out all of our Special Events being held all week long. The coaches would love to see you at some of our different Special Events. Stay active and we will see you soon!
